    Affine invariant visual phrases for object instance recognition

    Object instance recognition approaches based on the bag-of-words model are severely affected by the loss of spatial consistency during retrieval. As a result, costly RANSAC verification is needed to ensure geometric consistency between the query and the retrieved images. A common alternative is to inject geometric informa- tion directly into the retrieval procedure, by endowing the visual words with additional information. Most of the existing approaches in this category can efficiently handle only restricted classes of geometric transfor- mations, including scale and translation. In this pa- per, we propose a simple and efficient scheme that can cover the more complex class of full affine transforma- tions.     Improved functional mappings via product preservation

    In this paper, we consider the problem of information transfer across shapes and propose an extension to the widely used functional map representation. Our main observation is that in addition to the vector space structure of the functional spaces, which has been heavily exploited in the functional map framework, the functional algebra (i.e., the ability to take pointwise products of functions) can significantly extend the power of this framework. Equipped with this observation, we show how to improve one of the key applications of functional maps, namely transferring real-valued functions without conversion to point-to-point correspondences. We demonstrate through extensive experiments that by decomposing a given function into a linear combination consisting not only of basis functions but also of their pointwise products, both the representation power and the quality of the function transfer can be improved significantly. Our modification, while computationally simple, allows us to achieve higher transfer accuracy while keeping the size of the basis and the functional map fixed. We also analyze the computational complexity of optimally representing functions through linear combinations of products in a given basis and prove NP-completeness in some general cases. Finally, we argue that the use of function products can have a wide-reaching effect in extending the power of functional maps in a variety of applications, in particular by enabling the transfer of highfrequency functions without changing the representation size or complexity

    Functional Maps Representation on Product Manifolds

    We consider the tasks of representing, analyzing and manipulating maps between shapes. We model maps as densities over the product manifold of the input shapes; these densities can be treated as scalar functions and therefore are manipulable using the language of signal processing on manifolds. Being a manifold itself, the product space endows the set of maps with a geometry of its own, which we exploit to define map operations in the spectral domain; we also derive relationships with other existing representations (soft maps and functional maps). To apply these ideas in practice, we discretize product manifolds and their Laplace--Beltrami operators, and we introduce localized spectral analysis of the product manifold as a novel tool for map processing. Our framework applies to maps defined between and across 2D and 3D shapes without requiring special adjustment, and it can be implemented efficiently with simple operations on sparse matrices.Comment: Accepted to Computer Graphics Foru

    Instant recovery of shape from spectrum via latent space connections

    We introduce the first learning-based method for recovering shapes from Laplacian spectra. Our model consists of a cycle-consistent module that maps between learned latent vectors of an auto-encoder and sequences of eigenvalues. This module provides an efficient and effective linkage between Laplacian spectrum and geometry. Our data-driven approach replaces the need for ad-hoc regularizers required by prior methods, while providing more accurate results at a fraction of the computational cost. Our learning model applies without modifications across different dimensions (2D and 3D shapes alike), representations (meshes, contours and point clouds), as well as across different shape classes, and admits arbitrary resolution of the input spectrum without affecting complexity. The increased flexibility allows us to address notoriously difficult tasks in 3D vision and geometry processing within a unified framework, including shape generation from spectrum, mesh superresolution, shape exploration, style transfer, spectrum estimation from point clouds, segmentation transfer and pointtopoint matching

    SHREC'16 Track: 3D Sketch-Based 3D Shape Retrieval

    Sketch-based 3D shape retrieval has unique representation availability of the queries and vast applications. Therefore, it has received more and more attentions in the research community of content-based 3D object retrieval. However, sketch-based 3D shape retrieval is a challenging research topic due to the semantic gap existing between the inaccurate representation of sketches and accurate representation of 3D models. In order to enrich and advance the study of sketch-based 3D shape retrieval, we initialize the research on 3D sketch-based 3D model retrieval and collect a 3D sketch dataset based on a developed 3D sketching interface which facilitates us to draw 3D sketches in the air while standing in front of a Microsoft Kinect. The objective of this track is to evaluate the performance of different 3D sketch-based 3D model retrieval algorithms using the hand-drawn 3D sketch query dataset and a generic 3D model target dataset. The benchmark contains 300 sketches that are evenly divided into 30 classes, as well as 1 258 3D models that are classified into 90 classes. In this track, nine runs have been submitted by five groups and their retrieval performance has been evaluated using seven commonly used retrieval performance metrics. We wish this benchmark, the comparative evaluation results and the corresponding evaluation code will further promote sketch-based 3D shape retrieval and its applications

    Self-Supervised Discovery of Anatomical Shape Landmarks

    Statistical shape analysis is a very useful tool in a wide range of medical and biological applications. However, it typically relies on the ability to produce a relatively small number of features that can capture the relevant variability in a population. State-of-the-art methods for obtaining such anatomical features rely on either extensive preprocessing or segmentation and/or significant tuning and post-processing. These shortcomings limit the widespread use of shape statistics. We propose that effective shape representations should provide sufficient information to align/register images. Using this assumption we propose a self-supervised, neural network approach for automatically positioning and detecting landmarks in images that can be used for subsequent analysis. The network discovers the landmarks corresponding to anatomical shape features that promote good image registration in the context of a particular class of transformations. In addition, we also propose a regularization for the proposed network which allows for a uniform distribution of these discovered landmarks. In this paper, we present a complete framework, which only takes a set of input images and produces landmarks that are immediately usable for statistical shape analysis.     Learning Shape Segmentation Using Constrained Spectral Clustering and Probabilistic Label Transfer

    International audienceWe propose a spectral learning approach to shape segmentation. The method is composed of a constrained spectral clustering algorithm that is used to supervise the segmentation of a shape from a training data set, followed by a probabilistic label transfer algorithm that is used to match two shapes and to transfer cluster labels from a training-shape to a test-shape. The novelty resides both in the use of the Laplacian embedding to propagate must-link and cannot-link constraints, and in the segmentation algorithm which is based on a learn, align, transfer, and classify paradigm. We compare the results obtained with our method with other constrained spectral clustering methods and we assess its performance based on ground-truth data
